Long story short, folks, Electronic Arts had taken its $2 billion buyout offer directly to the shareholders of Take-Two Interactive, but after today’s rejection of said offer by Take Two’s board of directors, it appears as though any hostile takeover of the firm will be ever more difficult to accomplish.
While Take-Two reiterated what everyone was thinking, that they wanted to wait until after the 29th April release of Grand Theft Auto IV before considering any major deals, the company went a few steps further what appear to be preventative measures against any future hostile takeover attempts. Take-Two shareholders, as a result of these measures, now have more time to contemplate new members of the board of directors, as well as a "poison pill" agreement that will come into affect if a new shareholder buys twenty percent of the company stock or if an existing shareholder purchases another two percent of stock in addition to their current holdings.
For now, at least, it appears as though EA’s attempts to stave off the juggernaut that the Activision/Vivendi merger created have failed.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German video gamers, long wedded to their personal computers, are switching to games consoles and mobile devices, pushing German games software sales up 21 percent to 1.36 billion euros ($2.1 billion) last year.
The German games software association (BIU) said on Friday sales of games for consoles such as the Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation or Microsoft Xbox rose 38 percent to 904 million euros in 2007.
By contrast, sales of PC games slipped 3 percent to 458 million euros.
Games for mobile devices were the fastest-growing segment of the market, with sales rising 65 percent to 360 million euros as more casual gamers entered the market, the BIU said.
U.S. console software developer Atari has confirmed that it has received an offer from French parent company Infogrames to acquire all of its outstanding stock, enveloping the smaller American developer full into its parent company.
In breaking this story, Gamasutra has aptly suggested that Atari’s fortunes have begun to change for the better in the most recent of times, largely due to its sale of assets to relieve financial pressure and the hiring of Sony expatriate Phil Harrison.
The only comment offered by Atari’s board of directors was that they will give the proposal a "thorough evaluation".
